Not to underplay horrific cost burdens exposed here, but the lead patient in this story, paying $10k copay for MS drug on Medicare this year, will see expenses capped at ~ $3,200 in 2024. (Story does mention $2k cap in 2025.)

The Medicine Is a Miracle, but Only if You Can Afford It

A wave of new treatments have cured devastating diseases. When the costs are too much, even for the insured, patients hunt for other ways to pay.

In this Viewpoint, Donald Berwick explores the pursuit of profit in US health care across sectors—such as pharmaceutical companies, insurers, hospitals, and physician practices—and its harms to patients, and then offers potential solutions.

Important: Senate Dems say the Judiciary Committee will "take a hard look" at John Durham's "abuses" as revealed by the NYT. Dems should take this on. It'll counter House GOP BS by showing what a real investigation into "weaponizing government" looks like:

Big news from @[email protected] to begin extrapolating MA audit findings to the whole contract. Previously, they would only clawback payments for benes where overpayments were found. Potentially an opportunity to begin penalizing the biggest offenders! https://www.cms.gov/newsroom/fact-sheets/medicare-advantage-risk-adjustment-data-validation-final-rule-cms-4185-f2-fact-sheet

Medicare Advantage Risk Adjustment Data Validation Final Rule (CMS-4185-F2) Fact Sheet | CMS

In a final rule released today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) finalized technical details regarding the Medicare Advantage (MA) Risk Adjustment Data Validation (RADV) program that CMS uses to recover improper risk adjustment payments made to Medicare Advantage (MA) plans.

CMS will "extrapolate" the amount to claw back from MA plans for inflated risk scores from its audits of a representative sampling of each, attributing the estimated overpayment to a plan's full enrollment roster, starting with the audits for 2018.
