@czhang03 @fj US passenger rail initiatives work the same way. The Corridor ID funding for a 2nd Pennsylvanian train between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg involved $150m in funding for Norfolk Southern to make improvements to the Pittsburgh Line to increase passenger speeds, readd sidings that conrail removed and other changes. Same with funding for the S Line improvements to add more passenger trains between VA and Raleigh NC.
@czhang03 @fj 1) all us gov rail grants including existing efforts to eliminate at grade crossings are tax payer funded help for private companies. Via legalized monopoly of rail ROW as a “public good” 2) tax payers still see benefits of rail even if not riders. As freight (even with diesel locos) is more environmentally beneficial than diverting containers/goods to trucking. And for this, not having freight dump toxin chemicals into a community helps tax payers
