Mentors provide advice and support to help a junior person to fit in; sponsors create opportunities and visibility to help junior researchers move up. Mentors form one-to-one relationships, but sponsors help to form connections and create tailored opportunities to move the person whom they have sponsored up the career ladder. Sponsorship requires advocacy on behalf of the junior researcher; mentorship does not. π π

Youβve heard of mentorship in science, but what about sponsorship?
Senior academics need to understand how the two differ, and how sponsorship can promote diversity in research.

Most of my alumni have moved to (senior) research positions in industry or are currently in their postdoc positions, but Woosun is the first alumni of MTG to take on a professorship and he makes me very proud! π I encourage and support students to both academia and industry but this just feels like a little βyes!β in my βacademic bucket listβ π Well done, Asst. Prof. Jang! p.s. Woosun is also an AvH fellow so talk about following the footsteps β¦ π€£
