Mentors provide advice and support to help a junior person to fit in; sponsors create opportunities and visibility to help junior researchers move up. Mentors form one-to-one relationships, but sponsors help to form connections and create tailored opportunities to move the person whom they have sponsored up the career ladder. Sponsorship requires advocacy on behalf of the junior researcher; mentorship does not. πŸ‘ πŸ‘

You’ve heard of mentorship in science, but what about sponsorship?

Senior academics need to understand how the two differ, and how sponsorship can promote diversity in research.

Please allow me to point you to my new research webpage: https://materials-theory.group. Hope you will find it helpful.
MATERIALS THEORY GROUP

Welcome to the Materials Theory Group (재료 이둠 연ꡬ싀) in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (μ‹ μ†Œμž¬κ³΅ν•™κ³Ό) of Yonsei University (μ—°μ„ΈλŒ€ν•™κ΅), Seoul, KOREA

Tried #ChatGPT today for the first time. I asked "Please provide me a history of surface oxides on metals" and I must say I was impressed! πŸ‘
My research website is believed to be hacked. I have taken it down for now. Perhaps I need a more reliable service provider! 🀨
Another onymous, impact neutral review sent off. This time for JCTC http://proteinsandwavefunctions.blogspot.com/2016/01/writing-impact-neutral-review.html
Writing an impact neutral review

The idea of impact neutral reviewing was pioneered by PLoS ONE ten years ago this year. The idea is that ... PLOS ONE only verifies ...

😊 Sipping my hot tea, listening to Christmas carols, pondering on life (in general) -- Feeling happy and relaxed. I sincerely hope that 2023 will be a year of reset for me (in all aspects!) -- Motivated! πŸ‘
Dear friends, family, and collaborators, 2022 has been such a memorable year! For me, the most memorable: To really live happily: (1) Learn to accept/celebrate failures, and (2) learn to forgive and forget! I hope 2023 will be another awesome year! πŸŽ„ β˜ƒοΈ ❄️ 🎁
Good to see some institutional traction on #mastodon. My institute is now on here (@fhi_mpg_de) and two of the large German research societies (Max Planck and Helmholtz) are running their own instances.
Most of my alumni have moved to (senior) research positions in industry or are currently in their postdoc positions, but Woosun is the first alumni of MTG to take on a professorship and he makes me very proud! 😊 I encourage and support students to both academia and industry but this just feels like a little β€œyes!” in my β€œacademic bucket list” πŸ˜‚ Well done, Asst. Prof. Jang! p.s. Woosun is also an AvH fellow so talk about following the footsteps … 🀣
