General engineer. No, more general than that. Angry that we aren’t caring for each other more.

No people: Seriously. Listen to me, Right Now:

If you're not using tools from comparative religious studies in your analysis, then you are missing MASSIVELY important contextual cues about a LARGE swathe of past and present-day tech culture, and also potential insights for how to both react to and shape those discourses.

Elon Says Copyright/AI Lawsuits Don’t Matter Because ‘Digital God’ Will Arrive Before They’re Decided

So, we already wrote about the biggest headline grabbing moment from Elon Musk’s Dealbook interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin yesterday, but there was another crazy, Techdirt-relevant one involving c…

Again, to me the the thing that's really standing out is that all our leaders went for it, literally equating opposing aparatheid and genocide, like, in general, with terrorism and violence and... everyone just kinda said "naw."

The mayor of Toronto was calling a Palestinian Youth Rally "Hamas terrorism" the other day and that went out like a lead balloon.

Something IS different this time; what that means, I cannot say. But they can't just wave it away and shout "terrorism" anymore. That's gud

the good, useful internet did not make enough money. The broken, ad-blasted, unusable internet also doesn't make enough money
When you're doing a project that involves moving big things around and the cats rapidly flip between acting out of curiosity and out of terror.
Now Twitter too - absolutely wild stuff happens when you try to place cursor somewhere in a text box.
Across gmail, facebook, and linkedin, I'm finding text boxes suddenly don't behave as expected. I place the cursor and it goes somewhere else when I start typing, Backspace sometimes deletes more than one character. Is there some new popular node module for making text boxes that does wonky stuff?

I mean, what did they expect? That was basically a dare.

The engineers who designed the #Voyager probes half a century ago even thought of the possibility that a wrong sequence of commands may point the antenna dish away from earth (like someone did a couple of days ago).

And they implemented a self-adjusting mechanism that a few times a year scans the positions of a few known stars to infer the position of the earth, and point back the antenna in the right direction.

50 years later, these wonderful machines are still working, tens of billions of km away from earth, with only 69 KB of RAM, and even a wrong sequence of commands won't put them out of use, while nowadays 4 GB of RAM aren't even enough to start VsCode or IntelliJ.

The more I understand how they were designed, the more I feel like an early Medieval engineer looking at the Pantheon or other marvels of Roman architecture. Some amazing skills, knowledge and attention to details have been lost from that generation to ours.

You don't make a carrot-cutting machine that can handle all the random shapes carrots come in. You make a variety of carrots that grows straight, you make a soil mix that's mostly sand, and you plant using extremely regular spacing and density.

Then the problem becomes how to cut the now pretty uniform carrots and reject the "bad" ones.

Same goes for any automation: you don't make a computer "do art", you devalue the concept of art itself, you muck up the relationships between artists and everyone else. You screw up licensing and the concept of credit for work. Then, you can have computer generated imagery for a low cost API token.
