Friends new and old!

My first Mastodon post.

For the past 5 months, I've worked on a two-part investigation with Floodlight's Miranda Green & Mario Ariza.

The details are pretty bananas. And they get at the grim truth of what flourishes as local news coverage withers.

Part 1:
How power company cash secretly flowed to a half-dozen news sites in Alabama and Florida that assailed their critics

In the Southeast, power company money flows to news sites that attack their critics

Alabama Power and Florida Power & Light hired the consulting firm Matrix to help shape their fortunes. Matrix funded six sites that covered politics, filling a void left by the decline of local news.

Hey all - here's a quick timeline about how this TikTok spying stuff all went down:

In March, I broke the story that TikTok was working on Project Texas, a companywide effort to separate out US user data and limit China-based employees’ access to it.

China-Owned TikTok Is Racing To Move User Data To The US

TikTok is rebuilding its systems to keep US user data in the US and putting a new US-based team in control. But for now, that team reports to executives in China.

Jeff Legum nails the huge reason Democrats are so far behind in building a pool of trustworthy candidates & election strategies. IMO Dems fail at basic leadership esp at higher levels. As a former fundamentalist conservative, I can tell you that conservative GOP training starts young. Christian school/homeschool graduates are steered toward law purposely so they can take seats in gov't & courts. The Federalist Society takeover was 40+ years in the making.

1. This is an accurate description of oppo research and describes why oppo research did not discover the deceptions of Congressman-elect George Santos But it skips over a larger problem: the Democratic Party's failure to invest and prioritize research https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/22/opinion/george-santos-oppo-research-dccc.html
