This project began as an idea to publish 50 images in 2025 with 50mm lenses but the introduction of vintage cameras and lenses into the mix soon changed the parameters. It is now defined as 50 images where one element must be a 50 to 60mm lenses or a camera/lens made in the 50s or 60s. I'll be using a mix of digital and analogue euipment and looking forward to discovering what can be achieved.

Image 9 - Aphids

I have a Super Takumar 135mm f3.5 lens (circa 1964) that I’m looking forward to using with my Sony cameras. Today I used my Sony A7Cr, added a 17-31 helicoid macro extension and ventured out into the garden to shoot handheld. I’m quite impressed by the detail I was able to capture.

The forecourt to Circular Quay

This week I went out with the Meyer-Optik Gorltiz Osteron 50mm f1.8 on my Sony A7rii. I hadn’t intended to shoot any multiple exposure images but I’m glad I did 🙂 More about the image in the alt text.

Another from my experiments with a reverse front element Helios 58mm 44-2. I thought this lens was a bit of a novelty with its swirly bokeh but the reverse element brings in many creative possibilities. I couldn't decide between colour or monochrome for this one but found the monochrome adds interest and draws me in.

Of all the cameras I own, this is my favourite. A masterpiece of engineering from the 60s, it just feels perfect in your hands with it’s solid metal build and sleek design. It has no working light meter (hence the Weston meter) and I love that this slows you down to thoughtfully construct an image. It came with a lovely Super-Takumar 55mm f1.8 lens that I will mostly use. I’ve also acquired a 135mm f3.5. It's a departure from 50mm but fits into 50-60 as it and the camera were made in the 60s.

Image 4 - A weekend to remember. On Saturday, I noticed the aperture blades on my Helios 44-2 lens were covered in oil. Several YouTube videos later I decided to give a full dismantle a try. The lens was full of gunky old grease and many painstaking hours later I had the lens restored and also decided to mod the lens and reverse the front element. Sunday I headed out to the bees and lavender and had a wonderful time playing with the wild effects the reversal creates. Sony A7Cr.

I’m loving the opportunity to combine these cameras with the vintage lenses pictured. From the effects produced by the reversed front elementHelios, the soft and dreamy bubble bokeh of the Pentacon and Oreston, and macro opportunities when combined with a 17-31 helicoid tube, it allows for many creative opportunities. Recently I acquired a vintage 50mm lens, a Meyer Optik Gorlitz Oreston 50mm f1.8. I've been out in the garden using it to capture some handheld macro images with a 17-31 helicoid extension tube. I've tried macro a few times but I'm loving the challenge of getting the best out of this lens.

Sony A7Cr with Osteron 50mm f1.8

The Nikon cameras I’ll be using include the D90, my first DSLR. I’ve kept it for sentimental value and still enjoy shooting with it. It is paired with a Nikkor 50mm f1.8D.

The Nikon FE is a classic workhorse. This one has seen many adventures but is still in great working order. I love its worn patina. It is paired with a Nikkor Series E 50mm f/1.8 F Mount Pancake
