April 24, 1923: Voters of Beverly Hills, Calif., reject a ballot proposal that the city be annexed by Los Angeles, 507-337. Real-estate interests in the exclusive suburb backed the idea, but movie stars led by Mary Pickford and husband Douglas Fairbanks loudly urged a "no" vote.
April 14, 1923: British hurdles champion Percy Hodge trains for the event by carrying a tray and bottles and keeping perfect balance.
April 10, 1923: The latest recreational fad in Paris: cycle-skates. Just one wheel attaches to each foot, and skaters can either balance with ski poles or try to balance on their own.
April 6, 1923: An Illinois jury acquits six unionists of murder and conspiracy in last year’s Herrin Massacre that left 21 strikebreakers and guards dead during a coal strike. This is the second trial to end in not guilty verdicts for all the accused in the pro-union county.
April 3, 1923: Walking past the all-but-complete Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
March 31, 1923: The Ottawa Senators win the franchise’s 10th Stanley Cup, beating the Edmonton Eskimos 1-0 to finish a sweep of the best-of-three series. The Senators’ King Clancy is the first man in pro hockey history to play all six positions, including goalie.
March 30, 1923: At the University of Michigan, the cast of a student production of Booth Tarkington's play "Clarence."
March 30, 1923: The British free Egyptian nationalist leader Saad Zaghloul from captivity in Gibraltar, more than a year after forcing him into exile. The 63-year-old activist will be allowed to recuperate from illness in the south of France before returning to Egypt.
March 29, 1923: Soldiers of the British Indian army at artillery practice.
