Moving from Mastodon to a new instance or to Micro.blog
Mastodon has a feature to move accounts from one instance to another instance. I spent some time recently exploring how this works so that we could support it in Micro.blog. I used this to consolidate my ActivityPub presence from multiple Mastodon accounts to just @[email protected], powered by my blog and Micro.blog. From what I can tell, this feature is not well-documented. It does not exist in the ActivityPub spec. The “Move” activity examples in the companion ActivityStreams spec also do not cover moving accounts.
ZackEverybody's hyped about the #fediverse right now, but i don't think its current development is sustainable. #mastodon has always done development like this, but releasing changes without testing against other software is irresponsible. Fedi devs need to come up with a process to make changes that are compatible across implementations.

i think that a lot of those features were designed for a mainstream app and hadn’t been needed here. now that’s likely to change.
People on mastodon have been asking for some of those features for years. Mastodon is missing them, not because it hasn’t needed them, but because garg always pushes back on adding them.
@volpeon @nutsandbolts To add to this, it gets even worse when governments or companies start hearing the mastodon marketing, because their reach is even greater. The EU is on the fediverse but all their communication about it highlights mastodon instead of the fediverse as a whole. So these larger organizations are trying to make a beneficial move, but just amplifying mastodon's overreach. Its especially a concern since a lot of these organization are giving mastodon grant money. Smaller projects don't see anywhere near the financial/engineering contributions that mastodon gets because mastodon has used this advertising method since it was founded.
