@paulfree14 There is, at least theoretically, a difference between publicly funded and government funded.

The ZDF and BBC are, as far as I know, not directly financed and controlled by the government. RT and teleSUR are.
All my knowledge is from Wikipedia, though.

...hmmm. I'm not shure how it is currently working. The 'Bundesverfassungsgericht' hat mehrmals Urteile ausgesprochen die besagten Praxis sei Verfassungswidrig.

z.B.

die geben an wieviel und wer was bekommt. Gab mal ein Urteil vom Verfassungsgericht dass besagte die Praxis sei Verfassungswidrig da die Kontrolle allein von den Ministerien ausging.
Jetzt wird es formal in den Landesparlamenten bestimmt. Diese muessen sich an die Vorgabe vom KEF halten, duerfen aber sozial Vertraeglichkeit pruefen

@paulfree14 Die regierungen haben auch in Deutschland zuviel einfluss, keine frage. Aber ich denke, allein die tatsache, dass das geld nicht direkt von den regierungen kommt, macht die journalistische arbeit freier, wenigstens etwas. Es kann halt nicht einfach über nacht das geld gestrichen werden.

@paulfree14 I can't speak to most of these, but PBS' funding comes from government (state and federal sources), private institutions and individuals.

@paulfree14 I never saw these warnings before. But it is good that RT is being exposed for what it is: crap propaganda – a FoxNews for many of the American Left. When I point out the Russian funding of RT to people who share their links all I get is typical Whataboutery replies.

Pointing our the origins of this media seems to me like a simple and informative strategy to create a better media environment.

@jd Isn't it more important to point out which is more autonomous/more able to investigate and criticize the state? All of those examples are publicly funded to one extent or another, but I expect the BBC isn't beholden to the British govt the same way RT is to Putin
