Sophie Jane [MOVING]@mysteriam I only have unhelpful answers, I'm afraid... Ask around, introduce yourself with the #introductions hashtag, and/or scan the federated timeline for people talking about relevant things. (Though that last is easier on a smaller instance than mastodon.social)
Or https://joinmastodon.org/ has some basic filtering by interests and language, though it's not as helpful as it sounds.
