#MAC2018 I AM IN YOU. Er. At you. Anyway, I'm here and at #s202, partnerships between archivists and catalogers!
Now speaking: Michelle Sweetser and Stefanie Hunker, on the archives at BGSU. Almost complete turnover since 2015; very little new cataloging experience because someone else had always done it! #mac2018
They assigned the CAC an experienced bibliographic cataloger, but *she* wasn't familiar with archival issues! Needed to better understand the problem, on both sides. #MAC2018
Apparently NONE of the archives materials had MARC records? No records for microfilm? Few serials with holdings statements? (Boy does this sound familiar... #mac2018)
Meanwhile in the pop culture archives... they have a faculty cataloger, but she does 80 other things and can't keep up with the cataloging backlog
Shoutout to @[email protected], doing yeoman's work on exposing hidden collections, starting with brief records on ALL collections! #mac2018 #wooooo
@[email protected] How do you measure use? Talking about barcoding the boxes, using the catalog, google analytics for online FAs #mac2018
@[email protected] (Aack, gonna stop spamming Steve's feed now, sorry dude) *shakes fist at New Twitter*
Cataloging considerations: Is the item standalone (MARC) or collection (Find Aid?) As a cataloger she sits out on the reference desk to see how stuff is being found
Sweetser stressing need to create a shared technology and set expectations (e.g. when to use DACS vs. RDA, and being comfortable with differences) #MAC2018
The larger conversation: Where's the library going and how do we fit in? e.g. putting barcodes on items to fit into metrics #s202 #mac2018
Crosstraining! Cataloger training archivists on specific topics in the cataloging tool. This is so important. #s202 #mac2018
BGSU is migrating to @[email protected] for their finding aids! The usual issues with migration apply, but it's a step up from Omeka #s202 #mac2018`
@[email protected] On cataloging end, using RDA as much as possible-- MPLP style processing with a lot of options--not a lot of time for auth control etc. Creating stub finding aids and looking at tracking #MAC2018
