"Anime has frightfully low poc representation"

I-i... You know almost everyone depicted is non-white right

Afsgafag they added the boondocks to a list of anime with "poc" JESUS CHRISTO
@tinykinkshamer HGHFDSKLASKL
@prowlish I can't this is such a bad take on all fronts
@tinykinkshamer this fake woke bullshit is everywhere and ruining my life ggghghs GOD
@tinykinkshamer but boondocks is western animation
@cycm I am very aware of this lmao
@tinykinkshamer fair. it鈥檚 just a pet peeve of mine when things that are not anime are called anime, even though it really doesn鈥檛 have a legally protected destination of origin or anything
@cycm it refers specifically to Japanese created animation but because of its popularity in the US a lot of people are trying to claim it as anything cartoon
@tinykinkshamer hence the pet peeve lol
@cycm I don't understand why people cant enjoy foreign media without trying to shoehorn it into western culture like so much of the prevalent themes are inherently Japanese that they wouldn't make sense as American

@cycm @tinykinkshamer This amuses me a bit because the Japanese themselves sometimes refer to Western stuff as anime. I recall a friend's japanese copy of Newtype that had a feature on the new anime, Batman: The Animated series.

But in western contexts of course you're right, it's proper to use it for Japanese work specifically, although I do wonder if you'd consider the similarly styled work coming out of China or Korea these days.

@Nezchan @tinykinkshamer that鈥檚 really where it gets kinda muddy tbh. does anime specifically have to come from a japanese origin? or can it come from china and korea, and if it can come from china and korea, why can鈥檛 it come from the us? it makes me want there to not be any resistance to just calling them cartoons or animation, because that鈥檚 really what they are at the end of the day
@cycm @Nezchan I mean they are cartoons, animes just a shortened term for stuff from Japan thats works well because its gotten such attention internationally. Usually I'll just say x cartoon. Like hey have u heard of x, this Chinese cartoon series. Unless Im offered a specific term like manhua vs manga or kdramas vs novelas its just easier.

@cycm @tinykinkshamer Plus where do you go with stuff like Wakfu, which is made in France but with a clear anime pedigree stylistically? Or a French-Japanese co-production like Mutafukaz?

I'm honestly not sure what Korea or China call their animation products. They do have their own words for their comics so I'd imagine those words wouldn't be "anime" although they follow similar styles.

that鈥檚 where i think a system similar to this might work out well, not necessarily legally but more in a communication sense where it helps people know where something is from without having to spell it out for them. of course, it also cones with the barrier of entry where you have to learn all the different terms and what they mean

@cycm @tinykinkshamer The Flintstones was my favourite anime.
