so #fixmystuff any idea how to straighten up a slightly clanging radiator pipe? it doesn't sound like it's banging against anything, more like a kind of rhythmic tapping, increasing / decreasing in speed as the heat comes on / goes off. sounds like those pipes are under the floorboards and not connected directly to the radiators
@ryanlittlefield That kind of rattle or tap is usually air in the pipes in my experience. You can usually bleed that off when the system is hot by opening a release valve. Yes, your house will be a tropical jungle for a bit until it dries out, but may be quieter for it.
@jpacker okay so wait until the radiator has run, and stops, and then use the key to open it? or will that shoot out steam? haha
@ryanlittlefield Yes, you're going to lose steam while you do it, but you should push the air out as well. There are a couple good YT videos you can search for as well under "bleed house radiator"
@jpacker huh! i thought i had done that before but maybe i didn't do both units. thanks!
@ryanlittlefield Not a problem - we have baseboard heat now and I'd trade it for the old radiators any time.

@jpacker HMMMMM so when our upstairs one comes on at night, the floorboards go like, tap, tap, tap, tap tap tap tap tap taptaptaptaptaptapatptt-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t---t--t---t---t---tap-tap-tap-tap tap tap, tap, tap, tap

i just emptied, i think, all of them, and there was water running out of each of them. some seemed weaker in flow than the others. might there still be air in those or is that normal?

i'll have to check to see how it goes tonight w/ sound

@ryanlittlefield @jpacker You may also be hearing thermal expansion: the pipes heat and as they expand they pop under stiction against the joists, subfloor, etc.
