I am slowly weaning myself off the burd site, my depression can't handle that place
@Ironraptor are you having trouble staying connected to people? (since not everybody is going to jump onto Mastodon)
@Catwoman69y2k not really, I keep my Twitter mostly for brief interactions, the scrolling through people's blather I do here because there is far less things that depress me or fill me with existential ennui

@Ironraptor right. but on Mastodon you probably don't have as much Variety in content, since you follow far less people here than Mastodon. It's a catch-22.

overall, I think that any social site has room to become a place that just makes you sad or angry. right now, I just feel isolated in a lot of ways. I over all hang out on social media very very sporadically. I'm trying to keep up on Mastodon and friend as many people that I know from Twitter but I'm not overly active in it.

@Catwoman69y2k I'm going to try and be more active here. And honestly getting more interactivity from you is always a bonus :)
@Ironraptor any chance there would be something that is created where furries and such can leave there profiles for Mastodon, regardless of the instance that they are using?
@Catwoman69y2k Well Hashtags seem to spread across instances. So... that helps? THis place is a bit clunky now, but then again so was burdsite when it first started.

@Ironraptor as I said before, the fragmentation format of Mastodon (the instances) is the biggest killer for me.

Twitter never had that.

@Catwoman69y2k the fragmentation is definitely what kills it for me, and really wish that were handled more in the background rather than having to directly manage it
@Catwoman69y2k @Ironraptor if you don't mind me jumping in, the "fragmentation" is the major selling point of Mastodon. It's decentralized, so that there's no one who can ruin the fediverse for everybody. If an instance admin makes a policy you don't like, you can jump to another and bring all your contacts with you. All Mastodon instances can talk to each other*, so there's no need for centralization.
@Ironraptor @Catwoman69y2k (I'm a 6+ month veteran here at mastodon so if you have any questions on how to do x, or why does x work this way, I can try to help; I'm no admin though)
@Ironraptor @Mycroft I think I worry that they'll be some awesome people to meet, that I will be at a disadvantage to find. it seems like instances that Federate with other instances makes a difference in what you can find and see. trying to use the general surgery as much as possible to see if it helps find things around all instances.
@Ironraptor @Catwoman69y2k What helps for me in finding cool people is being slow and spidering friend lists. See someone cool, open their profile on a web page, look through their friend lists for cool people, repeat.
If you want to fav/boost/reply something from an instance that isn't federated with yours yet, you can paste the url into your instances search bar to force retrieval and interact with it from there.

@Ironraptor @Mycroft yeah. thats pretty much what Im doing.

If Twitter truly "gets worse" and people *seriously* jump ship... i just womder how viable Mastodon is. I could see the fragmentation/instances learning curve being something people might not wanna bother with. (seems easy/direct is preferred)

@Ironraptor @Catwoman69y2k but any actual "fragmentation" is either temporary (if two instances haven't federated with each other yet, they will when one user follows another) or deliberate (a few instances here are commonly blocked due to admins harboring abusive users or other noteworthy reasons)

There's no advantage inherent in being on the same instance.

@Ironraptor @Mycroft
"...if two instances haven't federated with each other yet, they will when one user follows another"

Just one person?

@Ironraptor @Catwoman69y2k I'm not 100% clear if it's mutual federation when only one follows another, or if it only follows federation in the same direction.

Federation mainly means that a remote instance's public posts show up in your instance's federated timeline; you can still interact with users and posts that aren't federated yet.
