malki !Still trying to figure out the relevance of being in a certain instance vs. another. If I understand right, mastodon.social is "nothing specific, most people are here" and then mastodon.xyz is the one that's "nothing specific except we ban hate speech" ?
Jeph Jacques@malki that's my understanding as well. I'm just in the general thing or w/e and haven't noticed any jerks. You can turn off the various timelines so you don't see 'em anyway.
Renato Lond Cerqueira@Jephjacques @malki Basically, the local timeline is very different depending on which instance you are, plus each instance is moderated differently (each can have it's own rules on what needs to be have CW tags and etc)
Also, because of the thing of several servers, it might be that you don't see all the toots from masto.donte.com.br from mastodon.social, if an account was never followed or seen from there.

Tavvy@malki It may or may not be relevant. The different instances just mean different servers. However, they can and often do make a difference if there's differentiation in administration/moderation or professed content preference (e.g., art). https://instances.social/

@JessFink I just registered @wondermark for posting comics. Once we all figure out what's going on here maybe there'll be a mass migration to one of the other instances?

Tom McHenry@tommchenry @JessFink yeah as I understand it you can follow anyone you want (from any instance) but your master timeline of all users only shows the instance you're on, so if you want to see toots from strangers then you might want to be on the instance related to whatever subculture or group you prefer
@JessFink @tommchenry But maybe there will be a way in the future to also "follow" an entire instance so you can see the other timelines? like subscribing to different subreddits, kinda

Stacey@malki @Gargron @JessFink @tommchenry @wondermark I believe it is now common for new accounts to automatically follow the instance administrators (and perhaps others that the admins designate), so that new arrivals aren't confronted with a blank timeline, and they're less likely to miss out on software maintenance notifications and such.
@malki .social also bans hate speech. most if not all do. they're just run by different people, .social is run by me, .xyz is run by @TheKinrar
