Seems like with instances, best bet is to create one central... persona, where you curate followers and HARVEST THEIR SOULS I mean hang out broadly, but then join separate communities as you see fit to participate in them? Maybe? Is that accurate?

@chuckwendig I just got excited by the prospect of soul-harvesting.

It's been so long...

@chuckwendig that’s how I am interpreting this — I joined this one for general stuff, another sci-fi one, and am planning on setting up an instance of my own running at my home server for my students and people interested in mathematical computer science for next semester, unless I get too confused

@chuckwendig Eh, more like create a central person to test the waters, and find followers, consider then if another instance might suit you better, migrate over there with your follower list, forget to delete your old account, eventually realise that people have been following it, redirect them...

At least, that's what I've seen from others.

@chuckwendig what I have is three accounts; this public one that I follow people on and toot indiscriminately (and increasingly cannot keep up with), and two private on other instances for specific reasons (one for writing, one for spiritual/woo stuff), both of which are friends-only.

most instances are like unthemed chat rooms; you can post whatever you like from them, and interact with other instances however you like, but they all feed into the river of Main.

@chuckwendig that sounds like a pain in the ass.
@chuckwendig That's basically the approach I'm taking.

@chuckwendig you got it. You can join other instances if you want to have access to their local feeds without following everyone on the instance. But you don't have to.

You can just follow the people you want from this account.
