So, possible 'hot take' here -

-NOBODY- looks good in the 'Reality Winner' case.

The Intercept was extremely careless with how they handled the material they were given.

Reality herself is apparently so utterly inept it's astonishing that she was able to get the document in the first place.

And the counterintel that managed to finally catch her? THEY are also inept; she -sucks- and she -still- managed to get the document out.

@munin It's too convenient not to be a propaganda op.
@maiyannah I thought about that but...counterintel looks -too bad- for that to really hold up I think.
@munin That's exactly what they want you to think.

@maiyannah That counterintel at BAH is so bad that any idiot can get away with whatever?

Not sure that's a message that they really want to promote...

@munin Why not?  If it's a genuine propoganda op you encourage the enemy agents to take more risks that get them caught.

@maiyannah Because it impacts the effectiveness of the CI at the contractor orgs.

If it was purely within an agency, sure, you could try for one of those - but when you have a mess of contractors involved, and you depend on them for 'mission readiness', things get more complicated.

Once you start doing that kind of thing, you start seeing other contractors filing [just!] grievances as to why they weren't picked, etc.

@maiyannah Additionally, in a situation -this- bad, you'll probably end up with more business than you can handle - spies everywhere.
