My approach has been to funnel my retirement $$ through a self-direct IRA to the Cooperative Fund of New England, and my non-retirement #investment $$ goes into my local #coop #investmentclub a la: http://www.coopwatercooler.com/discussions//building-to-co-op-movement-base-with-investment-clubs
