I skimmed through the games directory on the shareware CD-ROM I had as a kid, spending a few minutes on everything with an interesting description. ("BUILD A FISH, THEN LOOK AT IT.") A lot of one-developer freeware, foreshadowing the indie scene. But it's almost all badly executed or derivative -- lots of Breakout, Tetris, Pac-Man, Artillery and Light Cycles clones, lots of bad text adventures, lots of completely impenetrable RPGs. ZZT really is a hugely accessible standout in this crowd.
