I go back and forth on giving II robots gendered appearances. On the one hand, robots, why? but on the other hand, the text implies that their gender identity is obvious without asking. "You" never speak to the robot that comes limping into 404 during Interesting Times, but the narrative still calls her "she" implying she looks female in some capacity. Thoughts?
@lyssa Back in the day you could go off of battery color #raceicons #oldschool
@snowgray @Irrixiatdowne That's true, about the cyborg characteristics. I should probably start drawing those at some point too. Not sure of the relevance of 'Metropolis'? Also, Snow, I am definitely not that old (joined Nov 2012, I think?) and I appreciate this glimpse into the distant past.
@ImprobableIsland Care to weigh in with WOG? It's one thing to give Lyssa possibly-slightly-noncanon characteristics but per request I'm supposed to be including Rohit somewhere in this scene too.
@lyssa the fuck is wog
@ImprobableIsland word of god. Authorial wisdom dictated from on high, etc.
@lyssa whaddayawannaknow
@ImprobableIsland robots with gendered characteristics: yay or nay? On the one hand, why, they're robots, but on the other hand they get gendered pronouns and the narrative acts like it's obvious what gendered pronouns they should have, e.g. the shattered female robot during breaches and Rohit.
@lyssa The mannequin in front of you shows a humanoid creature seemingly constructed of metal and glass. Inside, you can see traces of veins and a nervous system twisting around a wiring harness. The creature appears to be female, although it's rather difficult to tell. She stands with her head cocked downwards, as though shy. Her face is a chrome mask, and behind it reflected light shines back at you from her black, camera-lens eyes. Sharp-looking spikes extend from her fingertips.
@lyssa In my mind they played along with the whole gender thing despite thinking it inefficient and silly.
@ImprobableIsland @Snowgrey Thanks you! This particular question has been niggling at me for AGES so it is very satisfying to get a proper answer.
@lyssa @ImprobableIsland I mentioned Metropolis because it's had a large influence on the public perception of what a 'robot' would look like, being among the first portrayals of such on film.
@lyssa Lyssa, ever the robot lover.
@Denealus Robots are the best Island race and I will fight you over that fact.
@lyssa You will fight me. I will be a squat. Or Mutant Den. I will win.
