#ff @aral, the person who brought so many people here :)
#ff @Gargron Aw, thanks, Eugen; and right back at ’ cha: the person who made it possible to begin with :)
@aral @Gargron The question is, what will Mastodon do what GNU Social couldn't?

@desikn Well, it got me using it. And a lot of other people who couldn’t even be bothered to jump through the hoops required by other clients.

Real test will be: how seamless can the experience of getting up and running with your own instance be made? Goal isn't to scale mastodon.social but to scale # instances. This, however, in an awesome set of training wheels with beautiful defaults.

+@Gargron

@aral @Gargron Call me sceptical.

I still remember the early days of Identi.ca (Laconica and later StatusNet that morphed into GNU Social) when a lot of people started using it because of Twitters fail whale. But when the whale disappeared the users also did.

@desikn @Gargron @aral I know anecdotal data is pretty much meaningless, but I jumped the twitter ship because I've been trying to find a sufficiently usable replacement for ACTUAL YEARS.

I run my own small instance now, primarily populated by my twitter buddies, and have zero intention of quitting it.
