1/ as an admin you're responsible for data integrity. For yourself if you have a per-user instance but mainly for your friends if you decide to host one or two.
2/ the legal part. Depending on your country you may have to be able to produce logs for various period.

It can be on your desktop or anywhere. Just not on the same server, basic rule.
