Found a cool discussion on /r/musictheory about why "California Dreamin'" sounds so haunting. https://www.reddit.com/r/musictheory/comments/2g8jfb/what_is_it_about_california_dreamin_by_the_mamas/#bottom-comments Learned two things:

- It was recorded in the same studio (same room, even) where Pet Sounds was recorded
- It's in C#m but also in the Aeolian mode which I think really lends to the "haunting" quality. You can especially hear it in the flute solo (see vid).

If you check out a site that explains Aeolian mode in terms of guitar scales, you can see the flute solo emphasizes the Aeolian notes: http://www.guitarorb.com/natural-minor-scale/
@nolan Actually I think you'll find that song is called "All the Leaves are Brown"
@andyAstruc Ah, just like my favorite Who song: "Teenage Wasteland."
@nolan @andyAstruc Well, to your credit, that song _should_ be called Teenage Wasteland because A) it's a better title and B) it's a better title plus C) the other title stinks
@tankgrrl @andyAstruc you also forgot D) nobody can remember how to spell the real title
@andyAstruc @nolan Stop titlesplaining, Andy. 😜
@andyAstruc @nolan It is called that. It is. Also you can hear me in the background saying something like, "this ice cream is too cold"
@nolan One day, when they've defeated the evil Hyperdorias, the Aeolians will return to Earth and teach us all how to play All Along the Watchtower correctly.
@tankgrrl Every time I try to learn a song because it sounds dark/haunting/moody/etc there's always some god-awful Greek word to describe it

@nolan The Greeks... always gotta be namin' stuff. ;)

And... I misspelled Hypodorian. *sigh*

@tankgrrl Well now they're definitely going to return to Earth and conquer us
