@bremner Actually that's not quite as smartass as you might have thought. DMOZ (apparently, all caps) inspired Nupedia, which was Wikipedia's successor.
DMOZ was /not/ an outgrowth of Yahoo (I wasn't sure of this earlier), but was the Mozilla project's freestanding and open alternative, adopted later by Netscape and Aol, now at Verizon (along with, soon, Yahoo).

@dredmorbius Well, also non-smartass in the sense that I use the various "List of $foo software" as a kind of directory. Like everything else in the universe they are imperfect, but I don't know of anything consistently better.
