This Patreon thing… I understand needing money to pay the bills and stuff…

But it's starting to look a bit like some kind of inverted pyramid scheme designed to bleed money from those with disposable income down to other patrons and so on and so forth until there's people at the bottom begging for cash who can't get it.

The people at the bottom are usually those with little ability to entertain others.

I know I've touched on this before but still.

This just doesn't seem sustainable or right.

@Elizafox it'll work until the next financial market freakout, and then it'll get ugly

@Elizafox I view Patreon as the Internet equivalent of an artist commune. You can drop a few dollars in the tip jar at the entrance to show your support to the artists you like.

It isn't really designed to be for people "at the bottom". It's a modernisation of art patrons (hence the name).

@Elizafox Possibly. Sharing, spreading money is hard.
In my personal case, as soon as I can cover all the rent etc (after taxes!) I'll start supporting the people I pledge to with more.

@Elizafox it does indeed look like a warped rehash of the European patronage system of previous centuries which basically kept the power of what did get funded in the hands of the rich middle classes and the religious groups

As you point out the tech maybe conceals extra levels all of which will want to get at some of he money..

@Elizafox to me it seems really dystopic. The middle class paying the wages of each other while the platforms they are producing or/for increase their margins.

@Elizafox It may be just but it's not sustainable.

Sustainability is something that surprisingly a lot of post-capitalists seem to have problems with. I'm always sort of surprised at.

@Elizafox How does voluntarily giving a few dollars to support things you like not "seem right"? You aren't being forced to pay. In all the cases I've seen it's a true donation. The content is being given away regardless of if you pay or not. Are you against donations and paying for something you like/use?

What is your alternative that would be more "right'?
