Hurtling toward cyberpunk dystopia: Amazon confirms picture and video stored indefinitely....

😰

PSA: when you buy an always on surveillance device, remember that it surveilles, and storage is essentially infinite.

@pnathan Infinite and constantly cheaper. There isn't even a barrier to entry or "drawback" like cost anymore.

Going to need LED hats and reflective face-paint etc etc soon...

@sten0_SE to be real, we need to figure out how to exist in a low-privacy situation. the other major option is to migrate to a low-connectivity locale: be a digital refugee, moving into the backwaters with low pressure.

someone once likened surveillance/adtech to pollution, and I think that's fair. but humans polluted for 2+ centuries until pushback started. And the pro-polluting forces are still powerful.

@pnathan Yeah it's a real problem, esp since monetization of tech seems to solely revolve around privacy violations and shit vendor security to rush product to market.

Then add in the work on algo/auto recognition - I'm talking gait, body language, body size/type recognition, tattoo recognition, car body style recognition etc

@sten0_SE Largely privacy is dead when the Eye is turned towards you.

The basic solution is to break the back of adtech via the law and enforce deep privacy protections with criminal law. Unfortunately, that literally will go up against the biggest cash reserves and some of the most powerful people in the corporate world.

@sten0_SE uh wow
@sten0_SE that link goes to the front page for me

@starhaze Sory my mastoN00B-ness is showing.

Basically just ramble on about cheaper storage costs preventing barriers to entry and the types of reconition: gait, gesture, body language, tattoo, car body style, facial etc

Add in some bitching about poor vendor security and monetizing data being the main draw for tech anymore

@sten0_SE ooh the thread that i replied to... yah that shit is fucked and fit stuff like gait in don't see a way to prevent identification reliably

@starhaze Hey, I did say N00Bness... lol.

Light-reflective material coupled with a light source is about the only answer I can honestly come up with.

@sten0_SE yeah i guess that would work for all cameras huh?

@starhaze Not 💯 % sure - typical cat and mouse I think.

There's anti-reflective coatings/lenses (think sunglasses) plus thermal vision. I would think most of those measures are cost-prohibitive for now but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@sten0_SE yah if they move to ir/ultrasound/em then the game changes significantly
