Hey Internet, I need a new laptop. which one? Macbook (Pro), Lenovo X1 or do you have any recommendations?
@bumi I'm pretty happy with my Dell actually.
@bumi Depends a bit on your OS of choice, I would have thought. I'm a Mac guy, but I'm not sure I would buy a MacPro if I was going to run Windows or Linux in it most of the time, nice though the machine is.
@Angostura I've been on osx like for ever, but somehow I feel 2017 is the year of linux on my desktop. - but not sure :)
@bumi depends on your reqs. do you need something powerful or just something for showing around? do you prefer bigger screens (14inch plus) or small ones (13inch and lower)? good keyboard and linux support, or is it okayish keyboard and windoze (one size fits all)? trackpoint / no trackpoint vs. touchpad vs. "i use a good gaming mouse anyway"? /1
@bumi next on the wishlist: decent or a really great display? in the latter case, HP seems to be taking the lead these days. thinkpad got more conservative display choices (note: its thinkpad, not just lenovo! thinkpad is a separate brand and manufacturing process than the rest of say, eg. the ideapad. there is no lenovo x1, just a (lenovo) thinkpad x1). /2
@ginsterbusch thanks a lot! super helpful! I am currently happy on a early 2014 MB Air. But the display is broken now and so I thought this is finally a good moment to switch to a linux machine again. I am doing "normal" development stuff. need to sync some blockchains sometimes but actually don't have special requirements - most valuable is small size and the good battery.
Today I am leaning towards a Dell XPS 13" - a bit cheaper than the thinkpad. any thoughts on that one?
@bumi depends. brand spanking new or second hand / refurbished? there also was a comparison thread on thinkpad-forum about this specific brand vs t470 or so. gonna dig it up later on ;)
@bumi well, the reviews for the dell xps 15 are at least not that bad. they (in thinkpad-forum.de) lean towards to "a good replacement" for Thinkpad. Also: the "Precision 5520" is the business machine equivalent to the XPS 15. But on the other side, the x240 looks twice as powerful as the XPS 13. Refurbished Versions even contain FHD displays .. which can come handy with website development (ie. previewing and stuff).
