I said I would have a go at designing icons for Mastodon, so here's a mockup with them integrated 🙂https://raw.githubusercontent.com/snwh/mockups/master/mastodon/mastodon_wide.png
@Gargron I went about making some custom icons to show you what I meant by "tailored icons". 🙂
@snwh Okay! Yeah I wanna see them!
@Gargron derp, this was a reply to my own toot, with a link, I guess it doesn't work like that. 😄 https://raw.githubusercontent.com/snwh/mockups/master/mastodon/mastodon_wide.png
@snwh Oh, no, it worked, I just didn't know to click on it (upcoming version of Masto alleviates that with a special reply icon btw)
@Gargron oh, haha. I look forward to it. Anyway, in the mock-up, I designed some icons to be less reliant on Twitter's design language (like the change to the boost icon) and to fit within their displayed size for clarity.
@snwh @Gargron but the logout & boost icons looks the same in the mock up. don't you guys think it may cause some confusion?
@rcmainak @Gargron I'd likely change it to a more conventional icon if implemented, permit me some whimsy in my mock-up. ;)
@snwh @Gargron hehe, just wanted to help out. I'm neither a designer nor familiar ruby.
@Gargron @snwh the rocket ship seems a bit complex compared to the other icons, but looking good overall!
@snwh looks cool! Is that an app or a website? What does "boost" supposed to do?
@jayzelenkov uhh, you're on the thing right now that that's a mockup
of.

@snwh Liked the rocket as the boost icon but I think the log out icon could be something else.

Well done 😄

@frd the classic metaphors for logout are rather dull.
@snwh Agree! But the boost icon being similar to the log out might make it loose its unique charm. Just a thought.
@frd icons shouldn't have unique charm, they should have consistent charm. ;)

@snwh @frd I don't know I have to agree with Farid here - the logout icon and the boost icon looks too similar.

Also as you say Sam, "logout" icons are just weird - I suppose its like "save" icons. The analogy is stuck in there

@frd @snwh

(also they are very cool - just to have that said out loud)

@ohyran @snwh I second that! Sorry if it gave the wrong impression.
@ohyran @frd I know. But you're ruining my fun with the icons. ;) I'll likely use a common metaphor in the end if they get adopted.
@snwh @frd THAT is enough reason in my book. If we can't design and enjoy it - then wth is the meaning?
@ohyran I enjoy the process as much as the result (maybe even more so) including the part where I defend or debate the design. :)
@snwh I want to write a GNOME client.. currently trying to GObjectize the matrix http api
@snwh The boost rocket and astronaut is a stellar idea but agree that it should not be a rocket on the logout. I also do not like the looks of the Mastodon logo. Not your fault but i don't like it. Maybe you could make a better? Maybe @eugen could arrange a competition about it? ;)
@shellkr I see what you did there. But regarding the logo, competitions are not good ways to do design.
@snwh @shellkr Competitions are nine times out of ten the suicide of good design.
@ohyran I would say always.
@snwh I've seen it go well once - it was at a highschool and the students where participants which was fun.
@ohyran well, of course the context of the competition does matter.
@snwh You are maybe right.. I just think it should have a more "happy" or "social" feel to it. I do not think it gives a good vibe as it looks today. Anyway.. always like your work. ;)
@shellkr that is what the mascot is for. :)
