So what happens when users trust the admin of an instance for their personal data (DM mostly), and that admin, because either the instance is growing fast or he doesn't know otherwise, uses big centralized "cloud" services like amazonaws, cloudflare, etc. with servers under US jurisdiction? Some users may not even get to know about it?

Should that be part of the "score" of various instances?

@jz Certainly that could be written explicitly on the /about/more page?

@jz I'd love to know where are the mstdn.fr servers for example.

Not that I don't trust them, on the contrary!

But when you do things right, you should let others know about it @taziden ;)

@taziden @jz @mathieu our server is a Dedibox MD 2016 hosted in France by Online.net. Currently everything is on this server. Backups are done both localy in the same datacenter, and on a remote NAS in our office, in France. So everything is hosted in France. Please do not hesitate to ask any question :-)
@mathieu @jz @taziden Additionnally we don't use object storage. Bu we plan to migrate on object storage with a Minio hosted on the same dedicated server. Later we plan to scale by adding some Dedibox LT 2016, (or maybe some Classic 2016).
@taziden @jz @mathieu Finally, I think the concentration of instances on Online.net servers (both Dedibox and Scaleway, like mastodon.social) could be problematic, but will disolve when the network will grow. We chose Online.net because we are working everyday on tens of Dedibox and we think it's by far the best quality/price ratio on the low cost market.
@mathieu @jz @taziden We are taking note of the idea and will communicate more openly about it on the about page. Thank you @mathieu :-)
@maethor @taziden @jz @mathieu It seems that OVH is working on something to make the deployment of a Mastodon instance easier in their infrastructure. France again, but it may help to have more diversity in Mastondon hosters in short term.
@OpteronPrime @taziden @jz @mathieu The real challenge of mastodon is not to deploy it. It is to manage it over time : upgrades, backups, etc. OVH can propose a pre-configured instance, but will not solve the real challenge.
@maethor @taziden @jz @mathieu I agree. But people have to be encouraged to deploy (and admin after that, as you said) their own instance; instead of massively going to existing one, with centralization risks. If hosters can help with that, event a little bit (it's business for them, so they can do it), it can only be positive for all :)
@OpteronPrime @taziden @jz @mathieu Forgive me if I don't see self-hosted botnets as only positive :)
We don't have to encourage people to deploy (and manage). We have to encourage people to deploy *and manage*. I think Yunohost is in better position to do it than OVH.

@maethor @taziden @mathieu
The thing is, if you have to be aware of these questions, ask yourself, be connected to mastodon (ie. logged in on an instance already), know the name of your admin, ask the admin, etc.. people won't get to start to know about these questions soon... :/

Maybe some form for the instance admin could ask them in a friendly way to fill in answers to specific questions that would then automatically be displayed on /about?

@maethor @jz @taziden I know you're doing everything right, @taziden already briefed me.

And it's because you're doing things right that you should communicate on it. :)

Who the fuck uses #AWS anyway? ...oh wait. *loses hope in humanity*
@jz I encourage the use of worker-run coops like https://koumbit.net
@jz Thats why more people should host their own instances together with people they trust.

@jz Most definitely. And end-to-end encrypted DMs should be a major priority.

Ideally, I would like to see the focus be on streamlining the installation of instances of one – the moment registering a domain and setting up your own instance of Mastodon just for yourself is (almost) as easy as setting up an account on someone else’s instance (< 1 minute) we will have crossed into exciting new territory in decentralisation.
