there's one thing i dislike about #mastodon users. a lot of them use no profile pic of themselves and use weird names instead of their own. i see fake names and fake photos. too bad...

@metkcom I think as the platform matures certain instances will insist on real name / pic policy and so those who want that environment will have it :)

@A1 @metkcom @metkcom I actually rather like the deviation. It's one of the best things about these sorts of novel social spaces - there are a lot of folks for whom the name on their driver's license or what their face looks like isn't representative of who they are or how they'd like to be seen by others. Policies like facebook's "real name" approach can be really stifling and harmful in a lot of cases.

@cwill @metkcom I think there are enough positives and negatives for both ways round, but that's why decentralised policies can be a force for good here because you get that choice. So long as instances are still diverse enough to not become echo chambers!
