SHARKTOPUS@davidak nah, just $5 one time on signup. I couldn't think of a way to map cost to use cleanly so I just went with something imperfect and simple.
@sharktopus you could charge $0.1 per toot. that way trolling would not be economical (aka only the rich can do it)
@davidak was thinking about either per toot or per character charges but I didn't think those would be a good place to start since they seem to impose additional cost based use and not based on avoiding blocking mechanisms. I would expect trolls to continue paying the price.
Worse still, hosting costs seem to be more related to follows and timeline fetches and caching and viewing and less dependent on actually writing content, so penalizing toots also fails to map well to costs
