When I see a swastika or something like a totenkopf, my initial thoughts are of those from one side of my family who I've been told died because of the people that used these symbols. So I'm rather hostile towards them.

Some from that side of my genealogy were imprisoned and/or starved by people who used different symbols. So I'm rather hostile to that imagery too.

I see it around so much, and I wonder why it's acceptable. I equate the hammer & sickle with death, like the swastika.

@ebel I mean, I'm not looking to *ban* anything. Certainly not with laws of a state. But I see a much more welcoming attitude towards that symbol, when I see it in the same light as swastikas. People with Swastikas in their profiles or pics get called out all the time, and socially ignored.

You see where I'm going? Am I making any sense? Idk

@holicshot @ebel I got stopped by a cop wearing hammer&sickle on his belt a few months ago. Not surprising considering soc-nostalgia is very real and a good chunk of the older population believe the country was better off under totalitarianism. Just think about trying to enforce a ban like that here, symbolic gesture at best :)

@HolicShot Well swastika is banned in some countries. I'm trying to point out that other countries view the hammer and sickle similarly. So what you suggest isn't unhead of.

But yes, you make sense. It's easy to say that specific symbol was "responsible" for terrible atrocities, and that's accurate. No one talks about the acts of violence and torture committed by Russian and Chinese communists, so no one sees those symbols as being behind some equally terrible things.

Double, at least as Americans, I think we're still too embarrassed about the shit we pulled with the Red Scare. That's why reclamation of the hammer & sickle happened, imo
