what is a Federated Timeline?
@isaacgarcia you are on one instance (server) of mastodon, there are many others, the local timeline is just the people who are on the same instance you are, the federated timeline is people from other instances. It isn't everyone, just people that someone on your instance follows.
@inmysocks @isaacgarcia That's interesting - so if no-one on my instance has followed someone on a particular other instance then my instance doesn't know of its existence.

@dominicduffin1 @isaacgarcia yeah, pretty much. There could be better tools for finding people on other instances, but it works pretty well.

Mastodon is derived from GNU Social which has been around for about a decade, so there is an existing culture that works but it takes more active engagement than something like twitter.
