So the idea with the Federation is there can be many communities with their own rules/main topics right?

If I'm interested in many things, let's say Red and Purple. Do I join both the Red and Purple mastodon instances (ie 2 accounts now)? Or do I join one and then use the federated timeline to see the other?

I've seen some great write-ups to explain Mastodon but this info would be useful for any non-technical person.

@jamesfirth Just follow people on both instances from the one you join. Cross-pollinate, as it were.
@jamesfirth Depends! If Red and Purple really hate each other, they might add each other's instance to their blocklist, so it is preferable to create separate identities on each. Also if certain kinds of posts are really "not done" on some instance.
@orionwl Oh I hadn't even realized an instance/herd could block an entire other instance/herd. Interesting.
@jamesfirth Yeah, opinions differ on whether it's a good or bad thing, but it's how it works. The admin of an instance decides the rules and which other instances to federate with. Some even only federate with one other instance. Well people make different twitter accounts for different things too so I guess it's similar...
