I think the terrifying thing is that if I actually set up and turn on these novelty Mastodon instances for which I just bought domains, folks will actually use them. And then what?
@lmorchard I think people who open Instances without having longterm plans for them are hurting the mastodon economy(or whatever you call it). Granted you may create yours just to fuck around, and don't expepct people to join them. but other people do. but have no plan for long term use. and that's hurtful to the entire community.

@lmorchard the only reasoon i haven't created an instance is because i know I wont' want to keep it running long term. It'd be fun for a while, but after a month or so i'd shut it down because of costs.

that's why i leave it for others.

@JThorne I'm also thinking about experimenting with themed & even limited federation instances. Like, you wouldn't sign up to make it your "home" necessarily
@lmorchard still. if you(royal you. not YOU in particular) don't have long term plans for it, or don't think you can support it long-term, than it's not beneficial to anyone. if you think you can support it long term, than it's great, even if it's themed, or limited. it's the longevity that's the deciding factor.
@JThorne theres a 'royal we' and a 'you in general' not sure there is such a thing as a royal you. just saying
@kodo there is now :)
