@adrienne @Nire @accelerando @antiares Some people have pointed out that you run the same risk by e-mailing anyone though
@Gargron @adrienne @Nire @accelerando it's different from email in that email is usually a private communication between two trusted parties, instead of being shown to everyone
@antiares @adrienne @Nire @accelerando Okay, but if someone malicious wanted to save your post they could in any case archive.is it, both on Twitter and here, so it's not much worse. But people need to be aware that they're publishing on the web. At least until private accounts are a thing
@Gargron @adrienne @Nire @accelerando good point, i've heard the nazis were making accounts here so that is entirely possible to do
@Gargron @antiares @adrienne @Nire problem with this is that archive.is is a separate tool and requires some separate impetus to create an archive page and catalogue them. by allowing other instances to archive mastodon users' posts by default, this leaves constant easy option open for aggressive use; it makes it easier for trolls who might be discouraged by basic protections

@Gargron @adrienne @Nire @antiares common trolls are relatively easy to deal with of course but the issue is "death by a thousand cuts"; constant erosion of users' patience by common trolls will be detrimental in the long run versus fewer big blatant Nazis signing up for accounts.

of course, in order to strike fear they may try to organize a concerted "raid" of many people to siege the userbase. but this will still be easier for them without basic protections

@Gargron @adrienne @Nire @antiares trust me i used to be DEEP into 4chan in teenage years. stopping harassment attacks starts with giving people access to hard privacy controls
