It creates confusion, makes the process of acquiring users more difficult, and makes the core product worse because of the issues that stem from federating between instances.

Yes, maybe it'll be good for the federated network, you never want a single instance to dominate, but the federation's interests are not the same as the networks'

@dgdas9 people want what they can't have. so it's probably a net positive.
@Duncan do you think there's pent up demand for an account at mastodon.social? Do you think people put off signing up until the premiere instant opens up again? I don't see that as a net positive. Though I can see an argument for how reopening mastodon.social on a slow media day could have us featured on some web publication's front page again, which is always beneficial. I wouldn't bet on it though.
