Computing history time!

While Open Source was a thing before then, OpenBSD was the first group to have readonly, anonymous, and immediate availability of the source code (as changes are being made) for everyone, with anoncvs in 1995.

Before anoncvs was available, many groups would release a tarball of the source code, or the whole repo, next to the binaries.

“A friend tells me he regrets migrating cvs -> svn -> git because he would have been better off skipping svn”

@phessler ah, fanf… he used to run mercury.cam.ac.uk, the mail machine which used to be an IBM but running Cambridge's very own OS! Few remember…
@cynicalsecurity crazy! was that back in the 80s, when it was somewhat common to have "your own" OS?
@phessler er… well into the '90s
@cynicalsecurity I somewhat regret not paying attention to those things at the time. I suppose my main excuse was "we only had macs at home".
@phessler I had left home by then ;) My "past" is computing in the '70s and '80s

@cynicalsecurity I'm "young" enough, that I was "certifying"[1] things to be y2k compliant in my final year of high school.

[1] we would put post-it notes on things that didn't contain electricity, certifying them as being prepared for the year 2000 ;).

@phessler I have an email by Ross Anderson of Security Engineering fame telling me to go get rich in the City instead of applying for a PhD with him in Cambridge… I so should have followed his advice…

@cynicalsecurity yea, I should have ran to SF and immediately gotten a job before the dot-com crash.

life would have been radically different, had I done that...

@phessler @cynicalsecurity That, or you could have bought some bitcoin in 2011...
@stsp @cynicalsecurity hell, I should have gotten my own Legacy IP addresses.
@phessler @stsp A Class B when we filled in ASCII forms and mailed them in!
@cynicalsecurity @stsp I didn't want to be greedy, just a few Class Cs ;)
@phessler @stsp you got Bs just asking when I started…

@cynicalsecurity @stsp wow. just crazy.

but then again, subnetting was hard.
