Twitter had a point in its history where people were building side apps for it. E.g., hashtags started organically and there was hashtags.org. People made lists as a separate app before they became integrated with twitter. Same w/ photo sharing (twitpic anyone?). Discovering users was done with separate sites. I look forward to seeing whether that sort of ecosystem evolves here.
@mdesjardins the beginning of the end for Twitter was when they squashed the dev community swarming around it IMHO. I'm excited to see what developers can build on top of Mastodon.
