Two things that would make Mastodon even better:

1) More instances that are clearly *for* something (e.g. photography, Doctor Who, Linux etc.) - I'm thinking like the old Usenet newsgroups.

2) A way to filter the federated timeline to only show the instances you are interested in. https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/423 looks like an option, but really anything that manages the firehose would be :ok_hand:

@MattEllery Physically local instances might also be sensible. Eg in same city or timezone. Both to minimise data traffic and international privacy issues and to find people who are awake
@natecull yeah, I can see that being an interesting feature to use - are you thinking more along the lines of instances filtered by proximity to your IP address?
@MattEllery maybe - just thinking about country / city / timezone really, not fine-grained geolocation. Picking a home instance should be up to the user, but location information for the server could be useful to inform their decision.
@MattEllery I'd like some clever semantic filtering code, myself, but making it run *fast* could be a challenge. #hmmm
