NTP is always a fun thing to play with. If you're ever insomniac then you might want to try reading the several revisions to the standard.
There's some fascinating stuff in there about how to handle clock drift.
To be honest, it really doesn't matter -that- much if your server is off by a couple minutes - but off by hours is a little bit much, and I'm not sure how Microsoft could have possibly gotten themselves into a jam like this.
HedgeMage@munin For general purpose computing, sure...there are a bunch of crypto applications, scientific stuff, finance, etc where fractions of seconds matter, though.
@HedgeMage Oh yes, HPC is a whole different kettle of fish. I've worked on some hard-realtime systems requiring 100-picosecond jitter before - that's fun.
@munin HPC is the easy end in my world...though I've handed off the nasty time stuff at this point, they just gave me an Emeritus position so they can keep bugging me sometimes. ;) <3
@HedgeMage Yeah, I'm fairly glad I don't have to live in the HPC world these days myself.
@munin I recently took over as ISO for Open Science Grid, so lots of HPC/HTC in my world. Most of the references to network time being a bitch were re: this adventure, though:

By comparison, I'm usually just trying to get people to send syslog in the same time zone as their collector ;-)

@HedgeMage Oh, I would -LOVE- to see everything in UTC. I really would.
But with the folks I work with, it's generally as much as I can do to get them to put together a complete list of the networks that they operate with, much less assets.
