You know what will make this weekend awesome? A fuckin' tropical storm that'll dump 15" of rain on a city that floods constantly these days. People are going to wig out and be assholes, inane local news will be of little help, and developers will keep paving everything for miles once the water has subsided.
@dasmith Batten down the hatches, matey.
@SlowRain Did Taipei catch anything from the recent typhoon?
@dasmith I don't know if they did or not. They're holding the #Universiade right now, in the middle of a brutal heatwave & typhoon season. So I imagine a lot of the events are indoors.
@SlowRain Where in Taiwan are you? I just assumed you were in Taipei.
@SlowRain What's it like? My friend who lives in Taipei has been to Kaohsiung and liked it a lot, but never told me anything about Taichung.
@dasmith As of this summer, #Taichung is the 2nd-largest city in #Taiwan. It doesn't have an MRT/Metro like Taipei & Kaohsiung, but one is under construction. It's also behind those two in international appeal & nightlife. It's less crowded than Taipei, but not as spacious as Kaohsiung, & the roads need improving. But, it has the best weather: not as hot as Kaohsiung in summer, not as damp & cold as Taipei in the winter, & typhoons seldom do much damage.

@dasmith #Taichung is really close to the mountains, so it's just a few minutes and you're in some beautiful scenery. Sun Moon Lake & Xitou are reasonably close. It's supposedly the gangster capital of Taiwan, but you'd never know it. Also, Western foreigners here are rather cliquey (but I don't know much about Taipei & Kaohsiung in that regard).

I like it a lot. A few drawbacks, but mostly a good place.

@dasmith Stay safe this weekend. Are you all stocked up?
@SlowRain I am. The main concern is flooding, which is inevitable and probably nigh-catastrophic. I intend to keep folks updated.
