yeah, the techno vs. funk-derivatives difference was the thing i was thinking of, mostly.

it's kinda funny; it's almost like the 50 Hz / 60 Hz regional variation and related spillover....

@gdkar @delores @hardbass2k8

I'm going to make the 50 Hz / 60 Hz difference my go-to explanation for every cultural difference.

"Why they gotta go and add such a large water tank instead of just making if flush properly?"
"Well, you know, ultimately it comes down to their 60 Hz electrical system."
@clacke @delores @hardbass2k8 @gdkar poor japan deals with this within its own borders.
@awg @delores @hardbass2k8 @gdkar At least they don't have varying plugs like China. Most consumer electric stuff is D/C anyway and doesn't care much about the line frequency.
@clacke @delores @hardbass2k8 @gdkar true! but I despise cheap wall warts, though.
@awg @delores @hardbass2k8 @gdkar I'm really happy that USB is taking over everywhere. And USB-C will probably achieve what #GreenPlug didn't.
@delores @awg @hardbass2k8 @gdkar

That said, the proliferation of USB plugs in public spaces requires you to be careful. Always use a dumb intermediary as a condom -- charge your USB battery, not your phone.

Once we get smart USB batteries, we're screwed.
@awg @tekk @xj9 On the topic of too-smart batteries, we've already had problems with the Apple batteries and their firmware.

@clacke @awg @tekk @xj9 laptop batteries are "smart" for quite a long time now :(
