Hey Mastodon & #mastoparle & #mastocafe !

I'm going to a Science, Technology, and Society conference today and tomorrow called Seeing Systems!
http://seeingsystems.illinois.edu/2017-workshop-preliminary-program/

Lots of queer technology, "lessons learned from a feminist tech & science lab", etc!

I'll likely be livetooting it! At the minimum I'll post links to notes from talks/panels!

For every talk, a thousand questions, a day straight of conversations, a year of collaborations, a dozen friends-to-introduce, projects upon projects upon projects

And that's just from 15 minute talks.

There is one other practicing engineer here, of 40+ people. After I asked one question, people were already reaching out to me for the techie perspective.

In A personal exploration of growing up in Kansas and the origins of trump-support there, I see echoes of silicon valley career-founders.

The conversations around conscientiousness and SJ implications of tech are not only happening- they're everywhere, and vibrant, and passionate and deep

And totally absent in engineering spaces.

And over and over, it's failures of unawareness. Empathic engineers abound- but unaware of schemas and disempowered from acting. The research exists- but how 2 find empathetic engs?

I must be in both, and I must be visible, and I am uniquely suitable to connect them, and I can, and I will.

Correction:
I can't do this; I'm just some fucking dude.
What I can do, though, is connect people, ideas, research, and applications.

I can foster partnerships, hand off projects, connect the passionate but mutually-unaware.

I need to do that, cause nobody else will who will be listened to.

I'll link my notes from talks after going for a walk. I've never felt this way... The smallest, biggest, nakedest, strongest I've ever been.

Like i can see my future butt-groove in the societal couch.

@twryst And those connections are crucial. Especially if one is in a position to be listened to, which isn't always the case with those working on SJ. It is an important butt-groove.
@twryst knowing and being able to stride out in your strengths is no small thing. More energy (was going to say power, but that's not the right word) and inspiration to you! So many people strive to find something that they can see and do or get lost in the attempt to be everything that they stay little. Who knows where you'll go. Don't think of it as a groove in the couch; you're making the couch.
