What has to go wrong with a person to start believing in a flat earth? And, what do the flat earthers believe is the reason why the entire world, including everyone they meet, is keeping up this conspiracy - who in their mind profits from it..?
@Gargron I thought the Flat Earth Society were just people who like debating things. Figuring out possible justifications and explanations for a conclusion that really isn't true.

@Gargron the Flat Earth Society basically used to be just this elaborate joke, where the people in the group wouldn't admit that it was a hoax and they didn't really believe it. Kinda like a "church of the flying spaghetti monster" type thing

But! somehow in the last 5 years it crossed into Actual Conspiracy Theory territory and THOSE people started believing in it. How and why this cross-pollination actually happened is what i personally wanna know

@Gargron i think initially the few Flat Earth Societies that DID take it seriously used it as a kind of litmus test, similar to how badly written scam emails are only responded to by the most gullible people. Anyone that believed that the earth COULD be flat, could probably be manipulated into believing other stuff!
@jk @Gargron A lot of the more recent stuff seems to be Biblical literalists, too, pointing to "the four corners of the earth" and such.
@Gargron have you heard a joke - flat earthers from all around the globe gather once a year to discuss their theory
@Gargron I reckon it’s simpler than dealing with the real problems that we all share...
@Gargron I've read once a zine where the writer got into different fake conspiracies. His view is that ppl tend to believe in fake conspiracies cause of 'den Kopf entlasten' writen by Joerg Bergstedt.
