A new aboombong album is scheduled for release on July 4th. Thought I would post the previous albums for anyone who wants to get a sense of the project. The first release was my attempt to do a solo project without help from à band. I ended up using some samples from previous bands, so I suppose I failed my mission. This one is very raw, but has some tracks I am quite proud of. The name ‘aboombong’ is an onomatopoeia for the beginning of one of the tracks. The cover photo is me with my first drum kit - age 3.

Asynchronic was the 2nd aboombong release. This one was noticed and promoted extensively in the sharity blog community and is my most successful release - apparently it was ‘aggressively hip’

Amnemonic was the 3rd aboombong release and the first to focus on guitar. I used a pawn shop off brand electric with open tuning set on a table and played the fretboard with my index fingers for most parts. Not having guitar callouses, some bloody strings resulted in- but it was fun nonetheless. The album cover art was just as much fun to make as the music.

The next aboombong release was much less noisy than the previous albums, but actually flowed nicely from the ambient track that ended Amnemonic. Atrophic took advantage of the new #bandcamp policy allowing for tracks up to one hour. Like all of my albums, that gave me an experimental goal - could I make a track that long that I liked? Taking cues from Klaus Schulze and others I set out to improvise around sequencers. The track was done live for each instrument then mixed and edited to create the final. The one hour of playing à wooden-headed dumbek was an experience. The pain may have helped get me in the right trance state for the rest.

Sticking with the long track precedent, anaphora also clocks in at an hour. It is centered on some recordings I did with my grandfather telling stories from his life. The track includes a loop of my son’s fetal heartbeat recorded on a cheap phone a couple years earlier - à cross generation collaboration. This one was personal

The next album was a real challenge. My wife bought me a kaossilator for Xmas, and I decided to compose #music with it. For those that don’t know, the kaossilator is an electronic instrument with an interface that creates unpredictable results each time you touch it. Learning how to play specific parts on it is, well, not what is designed for. This one was fun. The album art was fun too.

If there is an album I am most proud of in my music career, this one is probably it. I am a drummer and only pretend to play other instruments. For this one, I got a free piano from our local #buyNothing network, fixed it up, and practiced enough to compose an album’s worth of songs using only the piano as a sound source for my standard #musiqueConcrete approach. I think the results are my most successful in terms of taking the music in my head and getting it out into the world.

After 9 years of solo work, I decided it was time to return to collaboration and called on an old friend Raul Dorn who had been the frontman for my band back in the #80s - I sent him music, he sent me vocals and spoken words. His #poetry added à new dimension to aboombong. Some of my favorite songs are on this one. Raul took his experience with this one and now has a new solo project - Spirit Box (link below) that covers similar territory.

Continuing with collaboration, agnosis was a collaboration with an old college buddy from my undergraduate days and a local friend from my PHD days (and her husband). This one is well outside the standard aboombong vein with touches of Dead Can Dance and #Frippertronics

The obligatory lockdown album, this one was inspired by a film I watched on #freeJazz #drummer Milford Graves. Not that it sounds like his stuff, but the approach to music he described in the film changed my approach.

Jan 6th. Such a symbol of the challenges my country has had coming to terms with its history. This album came out on the anniversary of the riot and is my most overtly political work - the new album is something of a sequel. In my mind they work as a diptych.

This is my latest album. This one was a cross-continental collaboration between ABOOMBONG and DYNAMO STAIRS (David Liso, who sang on Agnosis). It was created out of flotsam from across the years that had accumulated from previous aboombong sessions. I needed another mind to pull them together. David helps out again on the new album along with a new collaborator -Gnash.
