I am begging that one day we can stop comparing the consent models for opt-in/opt-out tech shit on the fediverse to literal rape

Every time something like this comes out there are countless posts talking about how consent works by discussing rape, at times in graphic detail, and I am so very very tired of seeing it being used as a shock device to try and drive home a point.

You can explain how consent works without bringing up devastating life experiences that people reading your post will have experienced.

To explain why it's bad, in case it's not already apparent: It reduces our experiences to a rhetorical device.

It takes away the very real, horrific human violence involved and treats it like an abstract concept to be used as a gotcha.

@babe And we really, desperately need to talk more about consent, not just with regard to sexuality, but also childcare, disability, governance and yes, also how digital services are maintained.

This inflationary, top-shelf rhetoric isn't going to help with that.

@babe ung.
There's a certain kind of person who says they're progressive and liberal, but just for totally unrelated reasons they need to talk about rape/SA and put that image in your head.
@babe it's also a, frankly, extremely bad comparison because /rape does not work like that/ (most of the time), which all the people that have experienced it could tell said posters as well. It's purely shock factor, the violence against survivors *is the point*
@dequbed It reduces us to a rhetorical device and completely sidesteps the fact that it's a real thing that happens to real people, as if it's some abstract concept. I hate it so much
@babe Some people look at “one in three women experiences sexual assault in their lifetime, statistically you know at least of one” (lol as if it's that few) and don't read it as “I need to be mindful of my friends” but as “that makes it a really good cludgel to hit my enemies with!”. Needless to say, to hell with those people.
@babe I wish I could pin this post to the top of the internet. I feel the same way every time someone reposts the alex pretti video without a CW and screams that we need to do something. Yeah, sure, except you're also re-victimising those of us with PTSD from violent assaults.
