Spent a few nights this week, and most of the day today, writing a new GNOME App.

It lets you convert epubs to Kobo-formatted kepub files, and copies it directly onto your Kobo for you.

The code lives here: https://codeberg.org/nathandyer/Kepublicity

I'm going to request an app icon, then once that's ready I'll of course submit it to Flathub.

@nathandyer I can test it if you need

@deimidis Thank you!

If you're comfortable building it from source feel free to give it a try using the repository I linked. If you find any issues, please don't hesitate to file a bug report.

And if you're not comfortable building from source, no problem, I'll be sure to let you (and everyone) know when the 0.1 release is officially out.

@nathandyer any particular thing to test?
@deimidis The most useful thing to test is that it detects and writes to your Kobo correctly without making it explode. So far I've only tested it with my Libra 2.

@nathandyer Great, I have other model.

Codeberg is down now, but I will try later.

@nathandyer I've never used a Kobo, can it really not just use epubs?

@nieuemma Yes and no.

Kobos have two different renderers, and normal epubs use Adobe’s Reader Mobile SDK which has a lot of trouble properly displaying books. It's a miserable experience.

Kepubs get rendered in Kobo’s native WebKit-based reader, which is way nicer.

If you're curious, this post goes more in depth about the differences: https://andreklein.net/your-epub-is-fine-kobo-disagrees-blame-adobe/

Your EPUB Is Fine. Kobo Disagrees. Blame Adobe

Adobe isn’t exactly a beloved company these days. People begrudgingly use their stuff, because the Creative Suite is an industry standard (read: monopoly) or there are simply no worthwhile alternatives,...

@nathandyer getting an icon is also a point on my "before publish to Flathub" list. Where do you get yours from?

Welcome to GNOME GitLab

@nathandyer @corvus_ch happy to do it as well if the queue is long. :)
@hbons @corvus_ch That would be amazing, thank you so much! :) But I also know how busy you are and how long the queue for your work is, so please triage accordingly and take your time -- I'm a patient person 😄 I've filed this request describing some of my thinking, but I'm open to any ideas really: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Design/app-icon-requests/-/work_items/164
