Reinstalled Baldur's Gate 3 and still extremely annoyed by how hard it is to learn speak to animals AND the ability to focus on persuasion skills.

It really sucks that bard is basically the only option for a face character who can speak to animals without instantly encountering class overlap with companions.

"why don't you be a gnome" i dont wanna be a gnome i wanna be a drow SHUT IT

Maybe I can make warlock work with some fudging.

If you're confused why I'm so fixated on this, I would like to point you that each of the companions is such a hot mess that I would not trust any of them to have a conversation with anyone, let alone be the "face." Don't have the right classes either.

I really hate how they couldn't just let passive party member skill checks in because that would interfere with multiplayer, the most useless feature ever for a CRPG.

Oh, and Larian REALLY wants you to make a "Larian Account" or whatever the fuck that information stealing scam is so I just found a way to bypass the launcher. Fuck you, ya AI using assholes, I paid full price for this video game and I will enjoy it on MY terms.
Baldur's Gate 3 has a lot to like but there's so many baffling decisions. It minimizes the complexity of the class system by refusing to give you any information on what you get on future levels until you get there, but then maximizes the act of playing with unnecessary level of detail with item and character interaction to the point it becomes a chore (JUST LET A PARTY MEMBER SKILL CHECK DURING DIALOG INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM DO THE CONVERSATION)

It really is strange comparing it to Owlcat's Pathfinder games, which definitely have UI issues and information overload, but they streamline in logical ways and give you a lot more options to modify the difficulty to your taste, while Larian had to be bugged to finally put in custom difficulty and it's still very limited.

I like learning in Pathfinder. I just get more frustrated as I learn more of BG3.

Also, there is a reason Owlcat made a linear prologue that gives you three levels - because people were annoyed by Kingmaker's early game because low level D&D fucking SUCKS ASS in a single player CRPG.

It's miserable and always has been. The dice rolls for hits and misses against AC has never been fun in early levels in any simulated form. Please stop being so obsessive about being true to the D&D rules, most people HATE the D&D rules! Let us change them! No critical fails for skills! Please!

I think I've started to become a CRPG snob and there's still so many holes in my knowledge base, but god seeing people praise this game so much has begun to annoy me, especially the writing.

The performances are all doing heavy lifting for a pretty vapid fantasy quest, as is the complexity of choices and outcomes - though those are usually kind of dull on a narrative level.

The Pathfinder games aren't even considered a high bar for writing in this genre but they run laps around BG3 in terms of character complexity and theme work, even Kingmaker.

I don't want to discredit everything it does, there's some very strong character stories here, but it's a very lopsided package.

old man rant done, I'll go back to the old man spy game tomorrow maybe
