A (not particularly representative, fortunately) comment from student evaluations from my undergrad PL course:

> How the professor is so passionate about this topic is beyond me, but i can only imagine it is because of the time in computing they lived thorugh that this is somehow "cool".

I find it kind of impressive that they complimented my teaching ("passionate"!), insulted my research area, *and* called me old, all in the same breath

@lindsey lmao, I wonder what does that student consider cool… surely it can't be just "AI" right,,
@valpackett While I can't speak for this student in particular, I can tell you that "AI" got booed at the engineering school's undergrad commencement ceremony last week. So, empirically, that happens even at Silicon-Valley-adjacent engineering schools. I don't think that most of them think that "AI" is cool. I think quite a lot of them find it uncool but feel obligated to use it anyway, which is sad.
@lindsey i always wonder if students think professors don't read the evaluations.
@typeswitch I guess some don't, but I always read the damn things as soon as they're available
@lindsey professor amassed coolness during the early archaic computing period circa 420 bce
@lindsey
It's a sad statement on our times. ☹️
@lindsey It's unfortunate that the student still hasn't found that sort of passion in their own lives yet. Ah well... they're young and (probably) have time.
